Hardcore At the Gates fans will know what I'm talking about when I say that this band has released some of the more twisted, desperate and aggressive sounding stuff beginning with their first album \"The Red in the Sky is Ours\". However, one little release is often missing in this grand collection of pure destructive music, namely their 1991 demo entitled \"Gardens of Grief\". Now not only is the front cover of the later release of this demo (see Gardens of Grief \/ In the Embrace of Evil split with Grotesque) intriguing, but the music also. What we have here lads is a chaotic mix between great song composition, one of metal's best vocalists (in my humble opinion) screaming his shit out and pure maniacal death metal the way its supposed to be played. Right from the start of the first track you will get nothing less than a punch in your face, to the groin and to the balls. Tempo changes along with the massive output of riffs used work perfectly to create a unique atmosphere that sends you right to hell. This is one of those birth moments of a band that further defined the typical \"Swedish sound\" that most of us know as being a kind of mix between crunch and white noise. Every song on this tape has a very mature approach towards composition, not sounding very melodic, but dark, vicious and awestruck. There are no moments where the music stops for some silly interlude and every bridge or change in structure adds to the overall monument that is the music. This is fierce, ruthless death metal played by people who had a spark in them and wanted to play crazy music. As well as being well crafted and performed, the album also boasts a superior production and sound. The songs are all stand-out tracks, as each one has the strength and uniqueness to stand on its own, all the while adding to what is an overall masterpiece. Master really never has been recognized as the world class innovators they truely are, but many bands have mentioned them as a huge influence. The funny things is that most music in the death metal genre resembles Master’s classic work. We as fans, as well as the other bands owe a lot of respect to Paul and Master and what he helped to create. It is hard to put it’s greatness into words, this album just has an unexplainable unique atmosphere, not present on most death metal albums released since. Paul Speckmann treats the listener with very distinct and harsh vocals. More harsh even than his vocals are his lyrics, very well written, from a sarcastic\/cynical point of view. As for the riffs, man is the guitar tone heavy as hell and way ahead of it’s time. Basically there are no real flaws, the only thing that had always upsets me, is that it doesn’t last longer. Best songs on here have to be, well all of them. And sure as hell no Death Metal collection is complete without these legendary songs! So we hope we are doing this legendary album justice, because as soon as we listened to it upon its release, it became a personal favorite. This album, more than any other you might have heard, really seems like a tribute to the night, to the full moon, blood, darkness and evil. The guitar sound is not only cold, it also carries a very nocturnal feel to it. This can also be seen on “The Secrets of the Black Arts”, but I think it is much more successful here. The title track, “Darkside”, is one of the standout tracks on this album and possesses a great feel to it. I begins somewhat fast but then maintains a more mid-paced tempo throughout much of the song. The solo work is very well done and fits in with the music very well, working to accentuate the riff rather than some throwaway solo that serves no purpose. While some could make comparisons to Dissection and Dark Funeral (mainly due to the guitar tone\/player and little else), this really stands on its own. It shares small similarities in sound, technique and atmosphere, yet creates something here that I find to be wholly unique. The production is damn fine and every element of an awesome Satanic Death Metal record is in tact: tasteful drumming with intense blast-beats and rhythmic diversity to complex bass-lines which absolutely compete with the fucking stellar guitar wizardry. Purists may scoff at how Necrophobic aren’t true black metal or death metal, but I think they incorporate the best characteristics\u003cbr\u003e\nof the two distinct extreme metal genres to form a hybrid sound. “The Third Antichrist” is that fucking good. It sounds amazing and the whole layout is also brilliant.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEverything starts with a creepy, horror intro, which is followed by “From Beyond the Grave” - this one song is just a death metal masterpiece, so amazing that I could kill for it! The riffing in it is just excellent, very sharp and aggressive, combining the very old school death and thrash metal traditions of bands like Possessed, Mantas \/ Death, Master, old Sepultura, Nihilist, etc. In fact this song not only will force you into maniacal headbanging, with the fast and relentless playing, but also will make you scream the catchy chorus part - “from beyond the graaaveee!”. “Morbid Ways” then strikes with something very similar, but maybe even more in the classic Swedish death metal vein, but man... It’s another amazing song, with some truly vicious and devastating riffs. “Rapturous Genocide” is a demo track, re-recorded for this EP and maybe it’s not as great as the first two songs, but anyway I wish everyone to compose such “less interesting” (hehe) songs, as still it captures the rotten atmosphere and brutal old school death \/ thrash metal energy in an excellent way, at some parts speeding up very dangerously, into almost grinding blasts “Genocideeee!”). The song writing is varied; with mid-paced, up-tempo and speed metal songs, and so is the atmosphere; with a mostly dramatic\/tragic environment in the songs, but also tense moments where you can basically feel the danger coming, showing versatility both\u003cbr\u003ein performance and song writing. In addition, “Graceful Inheritance” is extremely catchy, with sing-along choruses, and will get you from the very beginning. All of this culminates in what is my mind the most “complete” thing Trouble ever created.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eFrom the mid-paced chug of a killer opener in “At the End of My Daze” to the last notes of “All Is Forgiven”, I can’t see filler or anything resembling a weak link. The riffs here are some of the best ever written, by Trouble or anyone else; every song has a manically awesome main riff that demands a display of headbanging. Riffs are undoubtedly the point of focus here; they make the songs, and they’re a timeless variety of great. Also, the interplay between guitarists Bruce Franklin and Rick Wartell is some of the best lead work you will ever hear in Metal.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eTrouble basically reinvented themselves with this release, and while I think it was a fantastic rebirth, those who aren’t so keen on the laid back stoner vibe they chose to adopt may not see it as a rejuvenation, but a step back (they did go from doom and gloom to collectively embracing their inner acid dropping free love hippie, after all). The lyrics are about Christian morality spiced with dark themes. And they come across as an ingenious Doom Metal ploy - instead of preachy songs, they appear more like depressing stories of death and hopeless salvation, If you are not struck down by the impact of Eric Wagner’s grief when singing the opening of “Pray For The Dead” you will never know true Doom.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“Pray for the Dead”, “Fear No Evil” and especially “The Wish” are an incredible opening force. This is Doom Metal, in all it’s glory. The touches of NWOBHM and thrash are still there, but the tempo drops most of the time and the guitar tone is something that other bands of the period would never come close to achieving. There are neoclassical touches and harmonized leads which really bring about the desponding atmosphere, and Eric Wagner’s vocals are hands down some of the best in Metal. “The Truth Is, What Is” has a fantastic chorus despite being a mash of riffs and continues the high trend. Surprisingly it’s the next 2 pre-”Psalm 9” tracks which seem a bit different, but the riffs on display still slaughter most Doom and NWOBHM from around this period. Contrast is key to its success and every stomping, down-trodden riff is offset by a fast break. Trouble love playing slow, but damn, they’ll rip your face off, too!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThat’s really what’s so great about Trouble; they’re never content to stand still, the music is constantly going somewhere. They’re throwing out riffs left, right and centre and still writing cohesive, memorable songs. Eric Wagner’s ‘king of the harpies’ vocals, the Priest-gone-Doom guitar delivery and that staggering rhythm section. You can tell that this is a band who have just been locked-up in a rehearsal room for years, playing to the walls, with minimal contact with the outside world. How else could have Trouble perfected a sound that’s so unique, so tight and so monstrously Heavy? There’s a lot of twisted riffing going on as well, with serpentine tones and a few squeals. The drumming on here is really good, coming from Per M. Jensen (yeah, he’s played with the Haunted and Nightrage). His playing is incredibly tight and powerful, which brings to mind Gar Samuelson and Dave Lombardo. If you like Exhorder’s “Slaughter In The Vatican”, but can deal with a more streamlined and less-rude version, this will be up your alley. Both bands had an evil, twisted sound with lots of tempo changes and some keyboards. Therion never sounded as wild or extreme as Grotesque, but they were heavier and more disciplined. Although “Beyond Sanctorum” uses mainly instruments and performance aspects of standard Death Metal, the songs are alreafy composed in a style more similar to actual classical music.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e“Future Consciousness” starts the album off with a churning Morbid Angel style intro alternating with dark tremolo melodies and some heavy groove. Other bright spots include “Cthulhu”, featuring deep, cavernous doom sections evoking the famous sunken city, alternating with frantic fast passages. “Enter the Depths of Eternal Darkness” goes from a sludgy opening section to fiery death metal, with some eerie lead guitar moments and is also quite satisfying. “Symphony of rhe Dead” has an early The Gathering feel, that bursts into Death Metal later on.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe highlight of this album is definitely “The Way”. This is where the bands developing symphonic style is most obvious, so “Theli” fans should definitely hear this song first. The content itself could best be described as ‘Dark Occult Metal’. It’s not Death Metal, not heavy metal, and not exactly a mix either. The band retains their fascination with obscure occult magick and prophecies within the lyrics, and the music revolves around killer mid-paced Metal riffs drenched in the vocal libations of Christofer Johnsson.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThe album starts off strongly with “The Wings of the Hydra”, and from there on the serpent has snaked about your spine. An addictive piece with an obvious Celtic Frost influence, chanting vocals, simple synth tones and arabesque guitar melodies which evoke the mythical age of the song’s namesake. The album’s ‘hit single’, “The Beauty in Black” is glorious and gothic, it uses a pair of operatic vocalists (male and female), a sort of predecessor to the revolving door of guest musicians the band would use on their later albums. Other excellent tracks include the charging “Riders of Theli”, the crushing doom of “Black” which would have fit almost perfectly on “Into the Pandemonium”. The rest of the album is equally dark and enchanting, with other standouts being the title track and “Evocation of Vovin”.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eSynthesizers, flutes multiple vocalists, and the core of the band are all clear and precise throughout, yet it still carries a very raw and dark, ominous tone to it which trumps the later studio efforts. This may not be quite as symphonic as many Therion fans demand of their material in recent years, but it clearly marks the point where this band transformed from a innovative Death Metal band into the Gods of Gothic Metal. The playful, thrashy riff of the title track, which opens the album, is a great introduction to the music at hand and Eric Wagner’s distinctive vocals sound powerful overtop. “Plastic Green Head,” “The Eye,” “Flowers,” these are all what you would expect from Trouble, huge churning riffs, 80 bpm drumbeats, Eric Wagners nasal yet powerful voice. They are simple, they are catchy, and they are just plain good. “The Porpoise Song” is a cover of a song by The Monkees, and strangely enough it’s very good. Big wall of guitar noise, and Eric singing in a less nasal and more melodic voice. “Opium Eater” sounds like it could easily be an Alice in Chains song.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eOn this album there is silly plenty of Sabbath worship, but also more of an upbeat, hard rock feel. We would even say that a little grunge has crept into their sound (to be fair, it’s probably the other way around, Trouble influence crept into grunge.) If you’re looking for a nice dose of stoner metal, you’ll find just that right here. Death metal pioneers Master are among those who have been shortchanged as a result of that phenomenon, and their 1990 masterpiece “On the Seventh Day, God Created... Master” remains a fascinating exploration both of the genre’s roots and of spaces it might have occupied haddifferent paths been taken.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThere are a couple of things that leap out immediately to even the casual listener. The first is the seeming primitivism of the music, with songs  consisting of relatively brief, bludgeoning pieces driven by relentless rhythms, cyclic riffs and simple melodic hooks. The second is the realizationthat someone is playing some seriously insane, brilliantly constructed leads. In this case, that someone is Paul Masvidal, far exceeding anything\u003cbr\u003ehe ever achieved with Cynic.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eBeneath the surface simplicity, lies a creative spirit that at once recalls the primal birth of death metal (which Master was both present for andvery much a driving force behind) and points the way to what the genre might have become. Very apparent are the genre’s hardcore roots, Master here eschewing the Slayer-derived technical architecture that came to dominate most “modern” death metal in favor of structures that would not have been out of place on Discharge’s landmark “Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing” release (there are even a few appearances of the infamous D-beat). Within the unrelenting storm of brutal repetition, the music’s core meaning is encoded, a sheer primal rage dripping from thunderous cycles of power chords and the open throated roar (again the hardcore influence) of vocalist and chief songwriter Paul Speckman. To this, Master adds moments of ponderous reflection where songs collapse into a sort of high decibel dirge, an innate sense of how to tease melody from the infernal depths of dissonance, and the aforementioned Masvidal solos (and it cannot be overemphasized just how much these leads rip).
