Back in 1985 Master‚Äôs creator Paul Speckmann had already compiled the classic songs for this debut album. Eager to get them on record, the band‚Äôs management was convinced what Combat Records was offering wasn‚Äôt enough, and so nothing happened. Unfortunately not until 90‚Äô did most get the pleasure of hearing the tracks, when they were (re-)recorded for Nuclear Blast! Master really never has been recognized as the world class innovators they truely are, but many bands have mentioned them as a huge influence. The funny things is that most music in the death metal genre resembles Master‚Äôs classic work. We as fans, as well as the other bands owe a lot of respect to Paul and Master and what he helped to create.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt is hard to put it‚Äôs greatness into words, this album just has an unexplainable unique atmosphere, not present on most death metal albums released since. Paul Speckmann treats the listener with very distinct and harsh vocals. More harsh even than his vocals are his lyrics, very well written, from a sarcastic\/cynical point of view. As for the riffs, man is the guitar tone heavy as hell and way ahead of it‚Äôs time.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBasically there are no real flaws, the only thing that had always upsets me, is that it doesn‚Äôt last longer. Best songs on here have to be, well all of them. And sure as hell no Death Metal collection is complete without these legendary songs! So we hope we are doing this legendary album justice, because as soon as we listened to it upon its release, it became a personal favorite. Jensen (yeah, he‚Äôs played with the Haunted and Nightrage). His playing is incredibly tight and powerful, which brings to mind Gar Samuelson and Dave Lombardo. If you like Exhorder‚Äôs ‚ÄúSlaughter In The Vatican‚Äù, but can deal with a more streamlined and less-rude version, this will be up your alley. While the\u003cbr\u003etwo don‚Äôt sound anything alike, I get a vibe from Uffe Petersson on this album that makes me think of James Hetfield on ‚ÄúRide the Lightning‚Äù.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eYou know, back when Metallica was an actual Thrash band instead of mainstream band.\u003cbr\u003eThe guitar sound is another standout; reasonably clean and easy to decipher but without sacrificing any heaviness. ‚ÄúThen Came the Killing‚Äù is well-produced without being over-produced. The band even look right, opting for the accepted late 80‚Äôs Thrash ‚Äúuniform‚Äù of ultra-long hair, ripped and faded jeans, leather motorcycle jacket and high top sneakers. Although the album didn‚Äôt come out until 1990, it is clear where Mezzrow‚Äôs sensibilities lie. Mezzrow represent high-quality Thrash of the old school. Riffs are undoubtedly the point of focus here; they make the songs, and they’re a timeless variety of great. It isn’t the Swedish chainsaw, but deafening and cavernous like bastardized thrash on crack.
