I've found this Cryptopsy release to be one of my favorite ones, especially sense Cryptopsy has been able to help further raise the bar and influence many modern technical death metal bands today. There is a lot that I like about this album, being that it is their first full length, and even at the time at which it was recorded, it sounds really, really surprisingly good. It was 1994, and although it wasn't the best sounding production that had ever been produced, it is still fun and brutal enough for me to rotate in for a couple of listens. Not a typical stunt for a band to be performing at the time of this record's release, but never the less, there was something to brag about upon these guys entering the scene with their truly progressing talent. This again, is another one of those albums whose songs all seem to flow together pretty well, and there wasn’t one that I didn’t like, as I am the type of person to tend to rotate an entire album, and I can usually find to like ALL or most of the songs on the record, not just the 1 or 2 good “hits” that people will usually waste money buying the whole CD for.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0745/4123/6444/files/hhr2016-11_crypstopsy_-_blasphemy_made_flesh_ac9c6259-cde5-405e-983d-f0291f8264cf-min.jpg?v=1740528993
dissection-the-past-is-alive-the-early-mischief-digipak-cd
DISSECTION - The Past Is Alive: The Early Mischief / Digipak CD

Classic Dissection material, what more can you ask for?

Are you one of those people who simply has to have the original pressing of every album? And you have been searching for esteemed Swedish Melodic Black Metal band Dissection’s first two, and extremely rare, demos entitled Into Infinite Obscurity and The Grief Prophecy? You could search forever but will have no success. That album that compiles the songs from both Into Infinite Obscurity and The Grief Prophecy, as well as tracks from the promo album for The Somberlain is in re-press now. The production is not the best, but do not complain, this is Black Metal history. In fact, in most of the songs the production brings out the underlying rawness in Dissection’s sound, much unlike the well produced albums which followed in their career. The songs which were on the promo for The Somberlain are shorter than they turned out to be on the official release of the album. Even with the undergrounds production and the somewhat short track lengths, the album is an awesome look at classic Dissection material from back when they were playing their best stuff. The riffs are jaw-dropping. Aside from his usual Black Metal voice, which has that awesome echo effect which makes them sound distant and more pure, he makes some awesome Death Metal growls which are much lower, the prime example being in the song “Son Of The Mourning”, which is more of a straight up Death Metal song, not Black Metal.

Included at the end is an extremely rare rehearsal of a side project of Nodtveidt called Satanized. Finally re-issued!

Trouble’s debut album did great things for Metal and remains one of the darkest, thrashiest Doom albums to date. A lot of things can change in six years, especially when you’re talking Metal and the dates are 1984 and 1990. The decade may have changed them, but not in a way that suggests decay or a decline in the quality of their resolve or their skill as musicians and performers. On the contrary, Trouble’s 1990 self-titled release is arguably their most mature, boasting a fleshed out sound with unparalleled songwriting, a great production, and the time-crafted vocals of Eric Wagner which had improved major in the years since their previous efforts. All of this culminates in what is my mind the most “complete” thing Trouble ever created.

From the mid-paced chug of a killer opener in “At the End of My Daze” to the last notes of “All Is Forgiven”, I can’t see filler or anything resembling a weak link. The riffs here are some of the best ever written, by Trouble or anyone else; every song has a manically awesome main riff that demands a display of headbanging. Riffs are undoubtedly the point of focus here; they make the songs, and they’re a timeless variety of great. Also, the interplay between guitarists Bruce Franklin and Rick Wartell is some of the best lead work you will ever hear in Metal.

Trouble basically reinvented themselves with this release, and while I think it was a fantastic rebirth, those who aren’t so keen on the laid back stoner vibe they chose to adopt may not see it as a rejuvenation, but a step back (they did go from doom and gloom to collectively embracing their inner acid dropping free love hippie, after all). But the Metal remained fully intact!

And as I’ve said, I think this is Trouble at their best. This is originality and innovation at its best, it is supreme quality. Heavy Metal was never better than this!

In fact, the sophmore slump is a disease that rarely seems to strike in the Metal realm and was near non-existent for any half decent early 80’s Metal band. As bands were being picked up relatively quickly by labels during that time the overall trend was for bands to evolve to a heightened plane as they honed their skills over two or three releases. This is exactly the case here where Trouble emerged from a NWOBHM/Thrash Doom cocoon and blossoming into a soul destroying depressive machine. Now do not get us wrong, we love every second of “Psalm 9” and will stuff that down your throat too. This album is a cornerstone of Doom Metal.

To dispell any fears right now we must look at the fact Trouble had written songs like “Gideon”, “Wickedness of Man” and “The Wish” before “Psalm 9” had even been released. Not only that, but the incredible guitar tone and Eric’s vocals have improved since the legendary debut even if that seems impossible to do. The lyrics are about Christian morality spiced with dark themes. And they come across as an ingenious Doom Metal ploy - instead of preachy songs, they appear more like depressing stories of death and hopeless salvation, If you are not struck down by the impact of Eric Wagner’s grief when singing the opening of “Pray For The Dead” you will never know true Doom.

“Pray for the Dead”, “Fear No Evil” and especially “The Wish” are an incredible opening force. This is Doom Metal, in all it’s glory. The touches of NWOBHM and thrash are still there, but the tempo drops most of the time and the guitar tone is something that other bands of the period would never come close to achieving. There are neoclassical touches and harmonized leads which really bring about the desponding atmosphere, and Eric Wagner’s vocals are hands down some of the best in Metal. “The Truth Is, What Is” has a fantastic chorus despite being a mash of riffs and continues the high trend. Surprisingly it’s the next 2 pre-”Psalm 9” tracks which seem a bit different, but the riffs on display still slaughter most Doom and NWOBHM from around this period. Finally, just when you think they couldn’t really top the power of the opening tracks comes the incredibly ominous “The Skull”. Once again the riffs here are inventive, memorable and shining with brilliance; the mind boggles that this release hasn’t been praised more.

Save yourself, get this album!

TRACKLIST

1. There’s a lot of twisted riffing going on as well, with serpentine tones and a few squeals. The drumming on here is really good, coming from Per M. Jensen (yeah, he’s played with the Haunted and Nightrage). His playing is incredibly tight and powerful, which brings to mind Gar Samuelson and Dave Lombardo. If you like Exhorder’s “Slaughter In The Vatican”, but can deal with a more streamlined and less-rude version, this will be up your alley. It’s a total about face from their first album, but “Weave the Apocalypse” is something that is totally different and a true testament to Invocator’s mastery of heavy riffing.

TRACKLIST

CD 1: Weave The Apocalypse
1. While their Stockholm contemporaries were busy pounding out punk-based riffs, Therion sounded like they were orbiting the gravitational field of a supernatural vortex. The band’s Hellhammer/Celtic Frost influences have been over-matched by their Possessed and Morbid Angel influences, to great effect.

This was the band’s first experience in the legendary Studio Sunlight. “Time Shall Tell” was recorded in December 1989, almost exactly the same time as “Left Hand Path”. Therion were never derivative of Nihilist/Entombed, the best parallel is with Grotesque, who recorded (part of) their “Incantation” EP in the same studio a few months later. Both bands had an evil, twisted sound with lots of tempo changes and some keyboards. Therion never sounded as wild or extreme as Grotesque, but they were heavier and more disciplined. Both EP’s feel like they’re tapping into an alternative vision of early Scandinavian Death Metal.

These four songs are the most evolved, complex compositions the band had made until that point. In any case, they sound better, noisier and more abrasive in their original form. Skogsberg got it right on his first attempt. The great thing about music like this is its unpredictability. Death Metal as disorientating and dark as this is a rare beast. A transitional phase between the band’s Death Metal roots and the hybrid of symphonic, gothic metal which they would carry forward for the rest of their career. This is an extremely dark album. The band retains their fascination with obscure occult magick and prophecies within the lyrics, and the music revolves around killer mid-paced Metal riffs drenched in the vocal libations of Christofer Johnsson.

The album starts off strongly with “The Wings of the Hydra”, and from there on the serpent has snaked about your spine. An addictive piece with an obvious Celtic Frost influence, chanting vocals, simple synth tones and arabesque guitar melodies which evoke the mythical age of the song’s namesake. The album’s ‘hit single’, “The Beauty in Black” is glorious and gothic, it uses a pair of operatic vocalists (male and female), a sort of predecessor to the revolving door of guest musicians the band would use on their later albums. Other excellent tracks include the charging “Riders of Theli”, the crushing doom of “Black” which would have fit almost perfectly on “Into the Pandemonium”. Classic 1990’s Death Metal!

One of the problems with looking back on a musical genre from a perspective years or decades removed from the core of the movement itself is that subsequent developments tend to obscure both a genres origins and threads within a tradition that died out without offspring. As a result, interesting and deserving albums often get lost in the shuffle as reviewers reflect on those albums most “influential” upon later achievements. Death metal pioneers Master are among those who have been shortchanged as a result of that phenomenon, and their 1990 masterpiece “On the Seventh Day, God Created... Master” remains a fascinating exploration both of the genre’s roots and of spaces it might have occupied haddifferent paths been taken.

There are a couple of things that leap out immediately to even the casual listener. The first is the seeming primitivism of the music, with songs  consisting of relatively brief, bludgeoning pieces driven by relentless rhythms, cyclic riffs and simple melodic hooks. The second is the realizationthat someone is playing some seriously insane, brilliantly constructed leads. In this case, that someone is Paul Masvidal, far exceeding anything
he ever achieved with Cynic.

Beneath the surface simplicity, lies a creative spirit that at once recalls the primal birth of death metal (which Master was both present for andvery much a driving force behind) and points the way to what the genre might have become. Very apparent are the genre’s hardcore roots, Master here eschewing the Slayer-derived technical architecture that came to dominate most “modern” death metal in favor of structures that would not have been out of place on Discharge’s landmark “Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing” release (there are even a few appearances of the infamous D-beat). Within the unrelenting storm of brutal repetition, the music’s core meaning is encoded, a sheer primal rage dripping from thunderous cycles of power chords and the open throated roar (again the hardcore influence) of vocalist and chief songwriter Paul Speckman. To this, Master adds moments of ponderous reflection where songs collapse into a sort of high decibel dirge, an innate sense of how to tease melody from the infernal depths of dissonance, and the aforementioned Masvidal solos (and it cannot be overemphasized just how much these leads rip). What emerges is something that belies its own apparent crudity, becoming not so much a statement of blind anger or stymied alienation, but a masterful declaration of violent intent.

TRACKLIST

1. The two new tracks on the recently released “Masterpieces” compilation already showed that Paul Speckmann wants to make it clear after a 25-year career where the true old school Death Metal hammer hangs. And that works excellently. “Four More Years Of Terror” in the title probably alludes to the second term of office of the Bush administration and contains superficially blunt (the number of breaks can generally be counted on one hand), but dead-on-the-point hammering Death-Thrash attacks with the usual Motörhead edge. The tempo is with wonderful penetrance almost continuously in the classic eighties turnip thrash beat, there is plenty of double bass, and Paule moos around wonderfully antisocially. Every song has its own reason to exist and to be listened to. Sometimes more epic, sometimes gloomier, sometimes closer to black metal and other times more on doom metal side.
