Hardcore At the Gates fans will know what I'm talking about when I say that this band has released some of the more twisted, desperate and aggressive sounding stuff beginning with their first album "The Red in the Sky is Ours". However, one little release is often missing in this grand collection of pure destructive music, namely their 1991 demo entitled "Gardens of Grief". Now not only is the front cover of the later release of this demo (see Gardens of Grief / In the Embrace of Evil split with Grotesque) intriguing, but the music also. What we have here lads is a chaotic mix between great song composition, one of metal's best vocalists (in my humble opinion) screaming his shit out and pure maniacal death metal the way its supposed to be played. Right from the start of the first track you will get nothing less than a punch in your face, to the groin and to the balls. Tempo changes along with the massive output of riffs used work perfectly to create a unique atmosphere that sends you right to hell. This is one of those birth moments of a band that further defined the typical "Swedish sound" that most of us know as being a kind of mix between crunch and white noise. Every song on this tape has a very mature approach towards composition, not sounding very melodic, but dark, vicious and awestruck. There are no moments where the music stops for some silly interlude and every bridge or change in structure adds to the overall monument that is the music. This is fierce, ruthless death metal played by people who had a spark in them and wanted to play crazy music. For a demo tape, the mix is good, not sounding too ripe but not too shabby, just the way I like it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0745/4123/6444/files/hhr2015-24_at_the_gates_-_gardens_of_grief-min.jpg?v=1740528915
blood-red-throne-brutalitarian-regime-splatter-vinyl-lp
BLOOD RED THRONE - Brutalitarian Regime / Splatter Vinyl LP

Blood Red Throne’s 2011 “Brutalitarian Regime” on 180 gram splatter vinyl!

Turning out a new full length every two years like clock work, Blood Red Throne’s release of “Brutalitarian Regime” was highly anticipated on everybody’s end. There is a lot that I like about this album, being that it is their first full length, and even at the time at which it was recorded, it sounds really, really surprisingly good. It was 1994, and although it wasn't the best sounding production that had ever been produced, it is still fun and brutal enough for me to rotate in for a couple of listens. With their third album, "Gastrike", and it’s follow up, "Fire Meets Ice", Ereb Altor abandoned the trappings of epic doom for a more black metal influenced sound. "Nattramn", the band’s fifth full length album, released in 2015, continued in that vein, focusing on merging their epic Viking metal with cold black metal atmospherics, but overall it seemed to be a darker album than before.

That brings us to 2017, and the release of Ereb Altor’s magnus opus yet, "Ulfven"! No “Scream Bloody Gore“ by Death and “Seven Churches“ by Possessed aren‘t the only ones. Back in 1985 Master’s creator Paul Speckmann had already compiled the classic songs for this debut album. Eager to get them on record, the band’s management was convinced what Combat Records was offering wasn’t enough, and so nothing happened. Unfortunately not until 90’ did most get the pleasure of hearing the tracks, when they were (re-)recorded for Nuclear Blast! Master really never has been recognized as the world class innovators they truely are, but many bands have mentioned them as a huge influence. The funny things is that most music in the death metal genre resembles Master’s classic work. We as fans, as well as the other bands owe a lot of respect to Paul and Master and what he helped to create. It is hard to put it’s greatness into words, this album just has an unexplainable unique atmosphere, not present on most death metal albums released since. Paul Speckmann treats the listener with very distinct and harsh vocals. More harsh even than his vocals are his lyrics, very well written, from a sarcastic/cynical point of view. As for the riffs, man is the guitar tone heavy as hell and way ahead of it’s time. Basically there are no real flaws, the only thing that had always upsets me, is that it doesn’t last longer. Best songs on here have to be, well all of them. And sure as hell no Death Metal collection is complete without these legendary songs! Recorded in 1996 and released in 1997, this classic album is one of the most overlooked masterpieces in Black/Death to be encountered. As “Black Moon Rising” begins, one hears that the Satanic Death Metal sound from “The Nocturnal Silence” has evolved into something more dark and sinister. The guitars are more piercing, the tempo is faster and the sound is all around more raw and dark. This is Swedish Black Metal at it’s best. This album, more than any other you might have heard, really seems like a tribute to the night, to the full moon, blood, darkness and evil. The guitar sound is not only cold, it also carries a very nocturnal feel to it. This can also be seen on “The Secrets of the Black Arts”, but I think it is much more successful here. The title track, “Darkside”, is one of the standout tracks on this album and possesses a great feel to it. I begins somewhat fast but then maintains a more mid-paced tempo throughout much of the song. The solo work is very well done and fits in with the music very well, working to accentuate the riff rather than some throwaway solo that serves no purpose. While some could make comparisons to Dissection and Dark Funeral (mainly due to the guitar tone/player and little else), this really stands on its own. It shares small similarities in sound, technique and atmosphere, yet creates something here that I find to be wholly unique. This is Cold Nocturnal Black Metal, and it is something that I recommend very highly, especially to fans of old Dissection.

For fans of: Dissection, Dismember, Dark Funeral, Entombed, Dawn

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0745/4123/6444/files/hhr2018-10_necrophobic_-_darkside_da819d66-cfca-4482-899d-a1e9e0cd6c79-min.jpg?v=1740529012
necrophobic-satanic-blasphemies-cd
NECROPHOBIC - Satanic Blasphemies / CD

Tracks 1-3 "Slow Asphyxiation" Demo 1990
recorded at studio kuben, march 1990

Tracks 4-6 "Unholy Prophecies" Demo 1991
recorded at sunlight studio, april 1991

Tracks 7-9 "The Call" EP 1992
recorded at sunlight studio, january 1992

A brief horror intro leads into the title track. It sounds slightly reminiscent of the intro to Sepultura's Schizophrenia, though far shorter. Musically, this isn't much different from the version that would appear on Darkside. The drumming seems a bit stale and repetitive, however. It's much more noticeable on this recording. Another thing that makes this E.P. significant is that this is the first Necrophobic release to feature Tobias Sidegård on vocals. This version isn't quite as raw as the later one, but there aren't too many differences, otherwise.

The next song is a tricky one, as it is a cover of Slayer's "Die By the Sword". The first thing that one might notice is that Tobbe's vocal approach doesn't quite fit the feeling of the song. Here, he goes for a deeper sound that feels a little too forced. The higher parts fit a little better, though. Still, nothing will ever come close to the original. Therein lies the problem in covering such an incredible song; it's very difficult to live up to such greatness. Joakim's drums don't have anything on Dave Lombardo's work on Show No Mercy, either. As far as the guitars, I have no complaints. David Parland and Martin Halfdan do an excellent job of maintaining the feel of the original. Despite the minor complaints, this is actually an enjoyable song. However, any band that tries to match the brilliance of the early Slayer albums is climbing up a slippery slope. Possibly, Dissection managed to get closest to this goal, with their cover of "Antichrist".

A cover of Venom's "Nightmare" follows this. I was looking forward to this, upon first listen, as this is one of my favourite Venom tunes. Here, Tobias sticks with the raspier vocal style, which fits the atmosphere much better. Musically, it's dead on; not much room for error when it comes to Venom. They do a great job of sticking to the original and not straying or changing the feeling. This is a top-notch cover of the Unholy Trio.

Finally, we have "Enter the Eternal Fire". Again, Necrophobic have taken on a hellacious task, as no one could ever possibly measure up to the standards set by Bathory, on the original. However, one must step back and realize that this shouldn't be taken so seriously. Obviously, they weren't attempting to compete with the original bands; instead, this should be looked at as the band simply having a little fun and recording some of their favourite songs. Musically, this is pretty solid. The guitars are dead on. Vocally, it's interesting but not nearly as morbid as the original. The bells and keyboards sound exactly as they do on the Bathory version, and the lead solo was nailed, perfectly. Again, the inclusion of this song is pretty awesome, as this is another song that has meant a lot to me for many years. He was joined by Seth Van de Loo (Severe Torture, Centurian, Cthuluminati) on drums and as a vocalist extraordinaire they were joined by Pim Blankenstein, frontman of long-running Dutch Doom/Death band Officium Triste.

Six years ago the band finally unleashed a five tunes killer EP named “Paradise Ends Here” that received excellent reviews in the international underground scene and created a lot of anticipation for a full length album.

“World Exit” is doing just that and it is everything one expects to hear from a band like Extreme Cold Winter. Each of the songs on this record is chilling, heavy, and menacing. “World Exit” defines the true essence of gloomy and dismal extreme metal music, for it is a very Heavy sounding slab of Old School Death/Doom Metal music, which all aficionados of Heavy harmonies will like.

A.J. van Drenth filled “World Exit” with real Heavy guitar riffs (that bring memories of Beyond Belief) never forgetting the right balance. Seth’s pummelling also complements the album very well and his thunderous battering supplies the right amount of vibe into the record’s annihilating laden aura and Pim Blankenstein’s vocal work plays a vital role in the album. His ghastly and repulsive delivery materializes an added vicious element to the mix. Multiple words could be used to describe this album: Timeless. Essential. Masterpiece. Definitive. Sickening. Yes, even sickening falls into this category, because believe it or not, back in 1996 when Cryptopsy released “None So Vile,” it was
unlike anything else at the time. From the first drum hits and guitar riffs of “Crown Of Horns,” it would have been obvious, and still is to this day, that Cryptopsy improved on themselves since “Blasphemy Made Flesh.” But then you combine some of the most technical and speedy Death Metal to date with the sickening
screams, snarls, growls, and grunts of vocalist Lord Worm, and I’m sure that 1996 was the year Death Metal changed forever.

“None So Vile” is a testament to the Death Metal formula, and the odd thing is is that not many have tried to emulate it. I don’t know why. Maybe it might be because of how difficult it would be to emulate an album of this calibur. Cryptopsy is a massive influence upon Death Metal. Many factors contribute to the influence Cryptopsy struck upon Death Metal. One of them is absurdly seen from Flo Mounier’s maniacal drumming. As far as I’m concerned, two words can sum up this man: Speed Demon. But just because he’s speedy doesn’t mean he loses any shed of technicality.

But Flo is not alone in making Cryptopsy. With the duo of Jon Levasseur and Eric Langlois on guitar and bass respectively, Cryptopsy was noted for their technical music playing. Just look at songs like “Slit Your Guts,” “Graves Of The Fathers,” and “Phobophile” to see how this duo completely tore apart everything that may have been considered a standard for Death Metal at that time. These two remade the standard by bringing shredding guitar and audible, crushing, and technical bass playing into the mix. The playing by these two is a testament to technical playing.

But what truly makes Cryptopsy, and many would agree, is Lord Worm. This man is down right beastly. No true word in the English vernacular could describe what this man brings to Cryptopsy and what he did for Death Metal on “None So Vile.” At this point in time, I don’t think anyone could have anticipated vocals like this. He is downright in-fucking-human. His screams are vicious, his gutteral growls are putrid, and the longevity at which he can perform and hold these vocals is insane. But not only did Lord Worm bring a sickening unnatural vocal style, he brings forth a style of lyricism that was complex yet somewhat simple. Lord Worm writes lyrics that are poetical descriptions of gore, murder, and insanity.

TRACKLIST

CD: None So Vile
1. Having said that, if you like Exhorder, Pantera, or Metallica, you’ll probably find this album to be great. Indeed, it blows the shit out of anything that Pantera has ever done. So what do we get? What makes this album such a great thing? Answer: everything.

It is not easy to describe what’s going on here, because Invocator uses a varitety of shifting, semi-groovy riffs, but at times you’ll also hear some Morbid Angel and Suffocation influences a few times. There’s a lot of twisted riffing going on as well, with serpentine tones and a few squeals. The drumming on here is really good, coming from Per M. Jensen (yeah, he’s played with the Haunted and Nightrage). His playing is incredibly tight and powerful, which brings to mind Gar Samuelson and Dave Lombardo. If you like Exhorder’s “Slaughter In The Vatican”, but can deal with a more streamlined and less-rude version, this will be up your alley. It’s a total about face from their first album, but “Weave the Apocalypse” is something that is totally different and a true testament to Invocator’s mastery of heavy riffing.

TRACKLIST

CD 1: Weave The Apocalypse
1.
