Hardcore At the Gates fans will know what I'm talking about when I say that this band has released some of the more twisted, desperate and aggressive sounding stuff beginning with their first album \"The Red in the Sky is Ours\". However, one little release is often missing in this grand collection of pure destructive music, namely their 1991 demo entitled \"Gardens of Grief\". Now not only is the front cover of the later release of this demo (see Gardens of Grief \/ In the Embrace of Evil split with Grotesque) intriguing, but the music also. What we have here lads is a chaotic mix between great song composition, one of metal's best vocalists (in my humble opinion) screaming his shit out and pure maniacal death metal the way its supposed to be played. Right from the start of the first track you will get nothing less than a punch in your face, to the groin and to the balls. Tempo changes along with the massive output of riffs used work perfectly to create a unique atmosphere that sends you right to hell. This is one of those birth moments of a band that further defined the typical \"Swedish sound\" that most of us know as being a kind of mix between crunch and white noise. Every song on this tape has a very mature approach towards composition, not sounding very melodic, but dark, vicious and awestruck. There are no moments where the music stops for some silly interlude and every bridge or change in structure adds to the overall monument that is the music. This is fierce, ruthless death metal played by people who had a spark in them and wanted to play crazy music. Overall it is a classic brutal death metal album, and If you’re a fan of that genre, give it a few listens and you will enjoy it a lot. As well as being well crafted and performed, the album also boasts a superior production and sound. The songs are all stand-out tracks, as each one has the strength and uniqueness to stand on its own, all the while adding to what is an overall masterpiece. The production is not the best, but do not complain, this is Black Metal history. In fact, in most of the songs the production brings out the underlying rawness in Dissection’s sound, much unlike the well produced albums which followed in their career. The songs which were on the promo for The Somberlain are shorter than they turned out to be on the official release of the album. Even with the undergrounds production and the somewhat short track lengths, the album is an awesome look at classic Dissection material from back when they were playing their best stuff. The riffs are jaw-dropping. We are also treated to the fantastic, soothing acoustic guitar on the two instrumentals “Into Infinite Obscurity” and “Feathers Fell”.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe vocals of Jon Nodtveidt are a bit different than what we were used to hear from him. Aside from his usual Black Metal voice, which has that awesome echo effect which makes them sound distant and more pure, he makes some awesome Death Metal growls which are much lower, the prime example being in the song “Son Of The Mourning”, which is more of a straight up Death Metal song, not Black Metal. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIncluded at the end is an extremely rare rehearsal of a side project of Nodtveidt called Satanized. They play a insane mix of Black and Death Metal, with no melody at all. All in all this album is an automatic buy for any big Dissection fan. Bathory, but also hidden Swedish folk melodies, remain the band’s largest influence, which is quite evident with the adventurous pacing, crunchy riffs and frequent epic clean vocals. The album mixes between heavy handed segments of galloping riffs and crashing percussion, and more nuanced melodies driven forth by a wall of keyboard notes. It’s that essence of balance that makes this album work so well, backed up by a very powerful production.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp align=\"JUSTIFY\"\u003eThe clean vocal melodies sound stronger and more confident this time around and the harsh and raspy roars are more furious and raging. The band leans on the airy keyboard passages a little more than before, but it adds a more melodic flare to the slower passages. The majority of the album focuses on Quorthon inspired riffing, with its thick power chords and thundering percussion mixed with an airy keyboard backdrop that brings to mind \"Hammerheart\" and \"Twilight of the Gods\". Unfortunately not until 90’ did most get the pleasure of hearing the tracks, when they were (re-)recorded for Nuclear Blast! Master really never has been recognized as the world class innovators they truely are, but many bands have mentioned them as a huge influence. The funny things is that most music in the death metal genre resembles Master’s classic work. We as fans, as well as the other bands owe a lot of respect to Paul and Master and what he helped to create.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt is hard to put it’s greatness into words, this album just has an unexplainable unique atmosphere, not present on most death metal albums released since. Paul Speckmann treats the listener with very distinct and harsh vocals. More harsh even than his vocals are his lyrics, very well written, from a sarcastic\/cynical point of view. As for the riffs, man is the guitar tone heavy as hell and way ahead of it’s time.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBasically there are no real flaws, the only thing that had always upsets me, is that it doesn’t last longer. Best songs on here have to be, well all of them. And sure as hell no Death Metal collection is complete without these legendary songs! Unfortunately not until 90’ did most get the pleasure of hearing the tracks, when they were (re-)recorded for Nuclear Blast! Master really never has been recognized as the world class innovators they truely are, but many bands have mentioned them as a huge influence. The funny things is that most music in the death metal genre resembles Master’s classic work. We as fans, as well as the other bands owe a lot of respect to Paul and Master and what he helped to create. It is hard to put it’s greatness into words, this album just has an unexplainable unique atmosphere, not present on most death metal albums released since. Paul Speckmann treats the listener with very distinct and harsh vocals. More harsh even than his vocals are his lyrics, very well written, from a sarcastic\/cynical point of view. As for the riffs, man is the guitar tone heavy as hell and way ahead of it’s time. Basically there are no real flaws, the only thing that had always upsets me, is that it doesn’t last longer. Best songs on here have to be, well all of them. And sure as hell no Death Metal collection is complete without these legendary songs! So we hope we are doing this legendary album justice, because as soon as we listened to it upon its release, it became a personal favorite. The solo work is very well done and fits in with the music very well, working to accentuate the riff rather than some throwaway solo that serves no purpose. While some could make comparisons to Dissection and Dark Funeral (mainly due to the guitar tone\/player and little else), this really stands on its own. It shares small similarities in sound, technique and atmosphere, yet creates something here that I find to be wholly unique. Therein lies the problem in covering such an incredible song; it's very difficult to live up to such greatness. Joakim's drums don't have anything on Dave Lombardo's work on Show No Mercy, either. As far as the guitars, I have no complaints. David Parland and Martin Halfdan do an excellent job of maintaining the feel of the original. Despite the minor complaints, this is actually an enjoyable song. However, any band that tries to match the brilliance of the early Slayer albums is climbing up a slippery slope. Possibly, Dissection managed to get closest to this goal, with their cover of \"Antichrist\".\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eA cover of Venom's \"Nightmare\" follows this. I was looking forward to this, upon first listen, as this is one of my favourite Venom tunes. Here, Tobias sticks with the raspier vocal style, which fits the atmosphere much better. Musically, it's dead on; not much room for error when it comes to Venom. They do a great job of sticking to the original and not straying or changing the feeling. This is a top-notch cover of the Unholy Trio.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, we have \"Enter the Eternal Fire\". Again, Necrophobic have taken on a hellacious task, as no one could ever possibly measure up to the standards set by Bathory, on the original. However, one must step back and realize that this shouldn't be taken so seriously. Obviously, they weren't attempting to compete with the original bands; instead, this should be looked at as the band simply having a little fun and recording some of their favourite songs. Musically, this is pretty solid. The guitars are dead on. Vocally, it's interesting but not nearly as morbid as the original. The bells and keyboards sound exactly as they do on the Bathory version, and the lead solo was nailed, perfectly. Again, the inclusion of this song is pretty awesome, as this is another song that has meant a lot to me for many years. It sounds amazing and the whole layout is also brilliant.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEverything starts with a creepy, horror intro, which is followed by “From Beyond the Grave” - this one song is just a death metal masterpiece, so amazing that I could kill for it! The riffing in it is just excellent, very sharp and aggressive, combining the very old school death and thrash metal traditions of bands like Possessed, Mantas \/ Death, Master, old Sepultura, Nihilist, etc. In fact this song not only will force you into maniacal headbanging, with the fast and relentless playing, but also will make you scream the catchy chorus part - “from beyond the graaaveee!”. “Morbid Ways” then strikes with something very similar, but maybe even more in the classic Swedish death metal vein, but man... It’s another amazing song, with some truly vicious and devastating riffs. “Rapturous Genocide” is a demo track, re-recorded for this EP and maybe it’s not as great as the first two songs, but anyway I wish everyone to compose such “less interesting” (hehe) songs, as still it captures the rotten atmosphere and brutal old school death \/ thrash metal energy in an excellent way, at some parts speeding up very dangerously, into almost grinding blasts “Genocideeee!”). The lyrics are about Christian morality spiced with dark themes. And they come across as an ingenious Doom Metal ploy - instead of preachy songs, they appear more like depressing stories of death and hopeless salvation, If you are not struck down by the impact of Eric Wagner’s grief when singing the opening of “Pray For The Dead” you will never know true Doom.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“Pray for the Dead”, “Fear No Evil” and especially “The Wish” are an incredible opening force. This is Doom Metal, in all it’s glory. The touches of NWOBHM and thrash are still there, but the tempo drops most of the time and the guitar tone is something that other bands of the period would never come close to achieving. There are neoclassical touches and harmonized leads which really bring about the desponding atmosphere, and Eric Wagner’s vocals are hands down some of the best in Metal. “The Truth Is, What Is” has a fantastic chorus despite being a mash of riffs and continues the high trend. Surprisingly it’s the next 2 pre-”Psalm 9” tracks which seem a bit different, but the riffs on display still slaughter most Doom and NWOBHM from around this period. Finally, just when you think they couldn’t really top the power of the opening tracks comes the incredibly ominous “The Skull”. Not only that, but the incredible guitar tone and Eric’s vocals have improved since the legendary debut even if that seems impossible to do. The lyrics are about Christian morality spiced with dark themes. And they come across as an ingenious Doom Metal ploy - instead of preachy songs, they appear more like depressing stories of death and hopeless salvation, If you are not struck down by the impact of Eric Wagner’s grief when singing the opening of “Pray For The Dead” you will never know true Doom.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e“Pray for the Dead”, “Fear No Evil” and especially “The Wish” are an incredible opening force. This is Doom Metal, in all it’s glory. The touches of NWOBHM and thrash are still there, but the tempo drops most of the time and the guitar tone is something that other bands of the period would never come close to achieving. There are neoclassical touches and harmonized leads which really bring about the desponding atmosphere, and Eric Wagner’s vocals are hands down some of the best in Metal. “The Truth Is, What Is” has a fantastic chorus despite being a mash of riffs and continues the high trend. From the first drum hits and guitar riffs of “Crown Of Horns,” it would have been obvious, and still is to this day, that Cryptopsy improved on themselves since “Blasphemy Made Flesh.” But then you combine some of the most technical and speedy Death Metal to date with the sickening\u003cbr\u003escreams, snarls, growls, and grunts of vocalist Lord Worm, and I’m sure that 1996 was the year Death Metal changed forever.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e“None So Vile” is a testament to the Death Metal formula, and the odd thing is is that not many have tried to emulate it. I don’t know why. Maybe it might be because of how difficult it would be to emulate an album of this calibur. Cryptopsy is a massive influence upon Death Metal. Many factors contribute to the influence Cryptopsy struck upon Death Metal. One of them is absurdly seen from Flo Mounier’s maniacal drumming. As far as I’m concerned, two words can sum up this man: Speed Demon. But just because he’s speedy doesn’t mean he loses any shed of technicality.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eBut Flo is not alone in making Cryptopsy. With the duo of Jon Levasseur and Eric Langlois on guitar and bass respectively, Cryptopsy was noted for their technical music playing. Just look at songs like “Slit Your Guts,” “Graves Of The Fathers,” and “Phobophile” to see how this duo completely tore apart everything that may have been considered a standard for Death Metal at that time. These two remade the standard by bringing shredding guitar and audible, crushing, and technical bass playing into the mix. The playing by these two is a testament to technical playing.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eBut what truly makes Cryptopsy, and many would agree, is Lord Worm. This man is down right beastly. He is downright in-fucking-human. His screams are vicious, his gutteral growls are putrid, and the longevity at which he can perform and hold these vocals is insane. There’s a lot of twisted riffing going on as well, with serpentine tones and a few squeals. The drumming on here is really good, coming from Per M. Jensen (yeah, he’s played with the Haunted and Nightrage). His playing is incredibly tight and powerful, which brings to mind Gar Samuelson and Dave Lombardo. If you like Exhorder’s “Slaughter In The Vatican”, but can deal with a more streamlined and less-rude version, this will be up your alley.
