Cutthroat and aggressive Death Metal with some Thrash tendencies!

Do you want to hear one of the first death metal albums? No “Scream Bloody Gore“ by Death and “Seven Churches“ by Possessed aren‘t thenly ones. Back in 1985 Master’s creator Paul Speckmann had already compiled the classic songs for this debut album. Eager to get them on record, the band’s management was convinced what Combat Records was offering wasn’t enough, and so nothing happened. Unfortunately not until 90’ did most get the pleasure of hearing the tracks, when they were (re-)recorded for Nuclear Blast! Master really never has been recognized as the world class innovators they truely are, but many bands have mentioned them as a huge influence. The funny things is that most music in the death metal genre resembles Master’s classic work. We as fans, as well as the other bands owe a lot of respect to Paul and Master and what he helped to create.

It is hard to put it’s greatness into words, this album just has an unexplainable unique atmosphere, not present on most death metal albums released since. Paul Speckmann treats the listener with very distinct and harsh vocals. More harsh even than his vocals are his lyrics, very wellwritten, from a sarcastic/cynical point of view. As for the riffs, man is the guitar tone heavy as hell and way ahead of it’s time.

Basically there are no real flaws, the only thing that had always upsets me, is that it doesn’t last longer. Best songs on here have to be, well all of them. And sure as hell no Death Metal collection is complete without these legendary songs! So we hope we are doing this legendary album justice, because as soon as we listened to it upon its release, it became a personal favorite. Classic 1990’s Death Metal!

One of the problems with looking back on a musical genre from a perspective years or decades removed from the core of the movement itself is that subsequent developments tend to obscure both a genres origins and threads within a tradition that died out without offspring. As a result, interesting and deserving albums often get lost in the shuffle as reviewers reflect on those albums most “influential” upon later achievements. Death metal pioneers Master are among those who have been shortchanged as a result of that phenomenon, and their 1990 masterpiece “On the Seventh Day, God Created... Master” remains a fascinating exploration both of the genre’s roots and of spaces it might have occupied had different paths been taken.

There are a couple of things that leap out immediately to even the casual listener. The first is the seeming primitivism of the music, with songs consisting of relatively brief, bludgeoning pieces driven by relentless rhythms, cyclic riffs and simple melodic hooks. The second is the realizationthat someone is playing some seriously insane, brilliantly constructed leads. In this case, that someone is Paul Masvidal, far exceeding anything he ever achieved with Cynic.

Beneath the surface simplicity, lies a creative spirit that at once recalls the primal birth of death metal (which Master was both present for andvery much a driving force behind) and points the way to what the genre might have become. Very apparent are the genre’s hardcore roots, Master here eschewing the Slayer-derived technical architecture that came to dominate most “modern” death metal in favor of structures that would not have been out of place on Discharge’s landmark “Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing” release (there are even a few appearances of the infamous D-beat). Within the unrelenting storm of brutal repetition, the music’s core meaning is encoded, a sheer primal rage dripping from thunderous cycles of power chords and the open throated roar (again the hardcore influence) of vocalist and chief songwriter Paul Speckman. To this, Master adds moments of ponderous reflection where songs collapse into a sort of high decibel dirge, an innate sense of how to tease melody from the infernal depths of dissonance, and the aforementioned Masvidal solos (and it cannot be overemphasized just how much these leads rip). What emerges is something that belies its own apparent crudity, becoming not so much a statement of blind anger or stymied alienation, but a masterful declaration of violent intent.

Tracklist:

What Kind of God

Latitudinarian

Heathen

Used

Demon

Constant Quarrel

Judgement of Will

America the Pitiful

Whose Left to Decide

Submerged in Sin

Classic madness and violence! This reissue of 1991 album compiles the debut demo from ‘85 together with four other tracks for the rather aptly titled “Fuckin’ Death”, and being brutally honest, could you possibly have a more suitable description for the sensory annihilation present on these recordings?

It’s that fact that half this material was recorded back in the mid-eighties that really makes it stand out, Death Metal was still in its infantile stages back then with extreme metal making a transition between the Crust influenced filth of Hellhammer and the ilk to a more brutal strain with bands like Possessed and Slaughter emerging out of the underground with a significantly more potent and brutal form of metal unlike anything heard before, and when you realize it came out at the same time as two monumental releases by the aforementioned bands you wonder why the fuck it never got quite as much attention as it was just as influential if not more so than those classics.

If you’re one of the unenlightened still wondering who the fuck Death Strike are, “Fuckin’ Death” was essentially just the first Master album under a different moniker, and along with Master’s debut and “On the Seventh Day...” are Death Metal classics. The first four tracks as previously mentioned are from 1985 and astonishingly ahead of their time. It’s basically ‘Hellhammer on crack’, fast brutal and utterly primal Death Metal with that huge hardcore influence shining through. Paul’s vocals are a maniacal and wretched reverbed howl that just add to the chaos conjured with Kirk’s unbridled leads, the d-beat styled drumming and thundering, bowel shaking bass. Songs like “Pay to Die” and “Re-Entry and Destruction” are impossible not to like, it’s extreme metal heaven (or hell, whichever you prefer), straight-forward, catchy and downright punishing.

It’s the lo-fi shoddy execution and production of the whole thing which adds so much character to this release and so many others from the same time frame, a character and feeling which is sadly lost in today’s tech and blast obsessed bands. In our books “Fuckin’ Death” is pretty much a classic of primitive Death Metal and when you consider when it originally was released that makes it all the more spectacular, and now that it’s finally seen a re-release it makes obtaining a copy something that won’t cause your bank account to have a fit.

Tracklist:

The Truth

Mangled Dehumanization

Pay to Die

Re-entry and Destruction

The Final Conflict

Man Killed America/Embryonic Misc

Pervert

Remorseless Poison

Tristania’s Classic Gothic Metal debut finally available again! What’s so striking about this album, is how it managed to capture, perhaps even revive, Gothic Metal’s purest essence: to invigorate sorrow and sadness, to highlight the beautiful energy that can be found in melancholy. Musically, ‘Widow’s Weeds’ is a near-perfect Gothic album, from start to finish. Intros and outros are always risky business, only seldomly having real added value on any album. Not this time though, they fit in perfectly with the orthodox approach that Tristania is taking. The intro on this album literally opens the door to Tristania’s cathedral of sorrow, with the choir guiding you to album opener “Evenfall”, as you are immediately immersed in the band’s beautiful dark and wintery scenery.
