Liers in Wait were a short-lived Swedish Death Metal band that formed from the ashes of Grotesque. Consequently, one tends to think of them as the sister band to At the Gates. Kristian Wåhlin (aka Necrolord) had written most of the music in Grotesque, with Tomas Lindberg writing the lyrics. Lindberg (and Alf Svensson) were out of the picture for Liers in Wait, so Wåhlin became the undisputed bandleader and creative force. He surrounded himself with capable musicians and recorded the “Spiritually Uncontrolled Art” EP. This record was a brief blast of intense death metal, lasting less than twenty minutes. It was the only thing the band ever recorded. Wåhlin has said in interviews that he wishes this band had recorded more material.

This is an all-time favorite of ours, especially considering that it is one of the more unique recordings from the early 90’s we have ever heard. It’s technical Death/ Black Metal and back when it was completely fresh and very interesting. But it’s also incredibly brutal, and difficult to listen to if you’re not ready for what is coming.

Liers in Wait offer you a furious whirlwind of slamming, technical riffs, probably influenced by early Atheist, Morbid Angel’s early recordings and Possessed, combined with Scandinavian evil and Lovecraftian horrors. Each song is composed of a great many of rapidly shifting riffs and skillful drumming, sometimes breaking into a very brief atmospheric solo or chunky riff. It will make your head spin the first time you listen to this, but after a few listens, you’ll be able to figure it out enough to enjoy the sinister technicality here.

The Necronomicon/Lovecraft lyrical content perfectly compliments the complex and sinister nature of the music. Overall, this is a true Underground Death Metal jam that any fan of early 90’s Death Metal needs.
